Cable Puller & Wire Tugger Guide
A cable puller is a force system, not just a motor and capstan. Match expected pull tension to the puller’s continuous/intermittent/peak rating, then verify the rope, grip, sheaves, anchoring or conduit mount and line-of-pull setup before the pull begins.

“Cable puller,” “wire puller” and “wire tugger” usually describe the same professional job
For commercial electrical work, the broad search terms cable puller, wire puller, wire tugger, cable tugger and cable pulling machine commonly overlap. The useful distinction is not the wording—it is the force class, duty rating and setup architecture.
A handheld drill-powered puller for branch and feeder work is not a substitute for a 6,000- or 10,000-pound tugger. Likewise, a machine with a high peak number may have a materially lower continuous rating. Size the system from the calculated or engineered pulling tension and the manufacturer’s duty limits, not from the largest number printed on the housing.

These examples are not an instruction to choose by force alone. Pull geometry, conduit fill, bends, cable construction, lubrication, sheaves, anchors and tension limits all affect the actual job.
Continuous, intermittent and peak ratings are not interchangeable
Greenlee’s current line makes the distinction especially clear. The G3 is rated 1,200 pounds continuously and 2,000 pounds intermittently. The G6 publishes 4,000 pounds continuous, 5,000 intermittent and 6,000 momentary. The GX10 publishes 6,500 pounds continuous and 10,000 pounds peak, with additional duty-cycle guidance above the continuous range.
That means a “6K” or “10K” label does not tell you how long the machine can sustain that force. When a pull is expected to stay near a limit rather than merely touch it, the duty rating matters as much as the headline peak force.
Rope and grip capacity have to follow the puller
The puller cannot be selected in isolation. Greenlee explicitly instructs users to select pulling rope and pulling grips with maximum rated capacity that meets or exceeds the tugger’s maximum pulling force. A 10,000-pound tugger therefore belongs in a 10,000-pound-rated pulling system; a lower-capacity rope or grip becomes the limiting component.

Mounting architecture can decide whether a puller is practical
Conduit/boom mounting, floor mounting, chain mounting and receiver-hitch arrangements solve different access problems. Greenlee’s G1 mounts at the conduit and can extend its boom with 1-inch rigid conduit. G3 is designed around a boom system and Greenlee also describes truck-hitch mounting. GX10 packages are offered with chain, floor and VersiBoom/Pull Connect configurations. Southwire’s MAXIS platforms can adapt between overhead and underground pulls and can use a standard 2-inch receiver hitch.
The “best” puller is therefore often the one that can be safely positioned for the actual conduit stub, vault, switchgear, manhole or overhead entry while keeping the rope path and operator position controlled.
Do not use a cable puller as a hoist or winch
Professional cable pullers are designed to pull cable through electrical raceway systems. Southwire’s MAXIS manual explicitly warns not to use its cable puller as a hoist or winch. Follow the manufacturer’s setup, anchoring, rope, sheave, operator-position and inspection instructions for the exact puller in use.
Greenlee, Southwire, iTOOLco and Current Tools are separate ecosystems
Accessory fit should not be inferred across brands simply because two machines have similar capacities. Current Tools publishes a product crossover guide that is useful for identifying its own alternative products, but a crossover is not permission to mix mounts, ropes, foot controls or structural components between manufacturers. Treat the puller, mount and load-path accessories as a documented system.

Frequently asked questions
Are a cable puller, wire puller and wire tugger the same thing?
In professional electrical pulling, those terms often overlap. The important distinctions are the puller’s force class, continuous/intermittent/peak duty rating, mounting system, rope requirement and intended cable-pulling application.
How many pounds of pulling force do I need?
Use a pull-tension calculation or engineered estimate for the actual cable, conduit, bends and lubrication, then select a puller and every load-path component with adequate documented capacity. Do not choose only from conduit size or cable size.
Is a 6,000 lb cable puller rated for 6,000 lb continuously?
