Rigid conduit requires a different selection path from light EMT. Compare one-shot and segment-bending systems, hydraulic power sources, shoes/supports and PVC-coated-rigid requirements before choosing equipment.

Rigid conduit changes the bender decision

Rigid metal conduit is heavier and harder to form than EMT, and larger sizes quickly move the job into hydraulic equipment. The most useful distinction is whether you need a dedicated rigid-only system, a multi-material large-conduit bender, or a powered shoe system that explicitly includes rigid in its capacity chart.

One-shot vs segment bending

A one-shot shoe forms the bend in one setup around the shoe radius. Segment bending builds a larger bend from multiple smaller increments and can extend the usable size range of a system. The method affects shoe selection, layout and required space; do not treat a “5 inch capable” listing as proof of a 5 inch one-shot shoe.

Compare rigid-conduit bender systems

Check whether a listing includes the hydraulic pump, shoe group, follow bars/supports and table. Those components can materially change the real system cost.

PVC-coated rigid requires its own verification

Protective PVC coating changes the outside surface and can be damaged by the wrong tooling. Greenlee publishes dedicated equipment such as the 884-PVC for 40-mil PVC-coated rigid. If the job specifies coated rigid, verify the exact shoe/support path rather than reusing an ordinary rigid setup by assumption.

Where the 555 family fits

Rigid-bender selection checklist

This checklist is especially important when shopping used equipment. A frame and cylinder may look complete in a photo while one missing shoe, follow bar or pump makes the package unusable for the intended size.

Why used rigid-bender pricing can be misleading

Rigid-bender ecosystems contain expensive accessories that are easy to separate from the base machine over years of shop use. Before comparing a used 884, 885 or similar system with a complete new kit, inventory each shoe, follow bar/support, pin, pump and table component against the manufacturer’s current or legacy documentation. Compatibility and completeness should be established before purchase price.

What type of bender is used for large rigid conduit?

Large rigid conduit is commonly bent with hydraulic or powered bender systems rather than small hand benders. The exact system depends on conduit size, one-shot vs segment bending and whether the conduit has a protective coating.

What is the difference between Greenlee 884 and 885?

Both are rigid-conduit hydraulic systems with one-shot 90-degree capability in 1-1/4 through 4 inch rigid. Greenlee also documents a 5 inch segment-bending path for the 885 with the appropriate shoe.

Can a rigid-conduit bender also bend EMT?

Some multi-material systems can, but rigid-only systems should not be treated as EMT benders by inference. Greenlee 881GX, for example, explicitly lists EMT, IMC and rigid; the 884/885 family is rigid-focused.

Does PVC-coated rigid need different tooling?

Often yes. Greenlee publishes dedicated PVC-coated rigid configurations and shoes. The coating changes the tooling requirement and should be verified from the manufacturer documentation.

Should I choose a rigid bender by conduit diameter alone?
