Greenlee Crimping Tool Guide
Greenlee crimpers span compact 6-ton jaw/die platforms, 12-ton U-die and dieless systems, and 15-ton multi-die tooling. The right choice depends on the connector system and die architecture—not simply the highest tonnage.
Greenlee system rule
Identify the exact tool/head first, then the die family, then the connector/conductor instructions. Greenlee publishes several cross-die paths, but each one has a named jaw or adapter requirement.

EK628L: the most flexible Greenlee 6-ton decision tree
Greenlee's EK628L is useful because the tool can change crimping jaws rather than forcing every job through one groove system. The standard CJ22 jaws accept Greenlee KC22 and KA22 series color-coded dies. The optional CJD3 jaw converts the platform to industry W-style dies and Greenlee KD6 dies. The optional CJK jaw is Greenlee's documented path to Thomas & Betts 6-ton dies.
That flexibility is exactly why the jaw catalog number belongs in the compatibility record. Saying only “EK628 accepts W dies” skips the component that makes the relationship possible.
EK622L: 6-ton die tooling with an adapter path
The EK622L accepts Greenlee KC22 and KA22 dies in its native setup. Greenlee also specifies the 04292 die adapters for industry W-style and Greenlee KD6 dies. That makes the EK622L and EK628L overlap in die families, but the hardware path is different: the EK628L changes to CJD3 jaws, while EK622L uses the 04292 adapter arrangement.

EK1230L / EK1240L: Greenlee's 12-ton U-die platform
Greenlee lists the EK1230L and EK1240L with its KC12, KA12 and KD12 dies plus industry U-style crimping dies. The EK1230L uses a smaller 1.20-inch head opening; EK1240L uses a 1.65-inch opening. Both are separate from the EK1240KL Kearney-head variant, which uses Kearney PH2-style dies.
This is an important naming detail: an “EK1240” search can lead to different head architectures. Verify the suffix and head type before ordering dies.

Use the exact model and head/die family above first. Then compare current Greenlee 6T, 12T and 15T listings by catalog number and included jaws/adapters.
EK12ID: dieless does not mean universal
The EK12ID is a different architecture from the EK1240 U-die tools. It uses an integral dieless indent mechanism across a published connector/conductor range. That can reduce loose-die inventory, but the connector manufacturer's instructions still determine whether a particular termination is supported. Do not substitute “12 ton” for a compatibility check.
EK1550L: 15-ton multi-die tooling
Greenlee publishes the EK1550L at 30,000 lb of crimp force and states that interchangeable adapters permit multiple die types. Kearney PH4/P14 dies are accepted without an adapter. For any other die family, verify the exact current adapter rather than assuming a 15-ton die will seat correctly.
The 15-ton platform belongs in the same crimping ecosystem, but it should not be merged with 12-ton U-die compatibility simply because both are C-head tools.

Which dies does the Greenlee EK628L use?
The EK628L is supplied with CJ22 jaws for Greenlee KC22/KA22 dies. With optional CJD3 jaws it accepts industry W-style dies and Greenlee KD6 dies; with optional CJK jaws it accepts Thomas & Betts 6-ton dies.
Does the Greenlee EK1240L accept U dies?
Yes. Greenlee lists the EK1230L and EK1240L for Greenlee KC12, KA12 and KD12 dies plus industry U-style crimping dies.
Is the Greenlee EK12ID a U-die crimper?
No. EK12ID is a 12-ton dieless/indent architecture. It should not be treated as a removable U-die tool just because the force class is similar.
Which dies fit the Greenlee EK1550L?
Greenlee states that the 15-ton EK1550L accepts Kearney PH4/P14 dies without an adapter and uses interchangeable adapters for a wider range of die types. Exact adapter selection should be verified for the desired die family.
Can I use another brand of die in a Greenlee crimper?
Only when Greenlee and the connector/application documentation support the relevant relationship. Greenlee explicitly documents several competitive die paths, but physical fit alone is not enough.
