Hydraulic describes the force system—not the compatibility system

A hydraulic crimping tool can be manual, remote-pump or battery-powered. What determines whether it can make a particular electrical connection is the combination of output force, head opening, die architecture, connector/conductor range and the published installation system.

Head architecture matters as much as force

Burndy's Y750HSXT and Y750BHXT are 12-ton C-head tools using U dies. Greenlee's RK12CX is a 24,000-lb remote multi-purpose head and requires the UA12T adapter when the job calls for 12-ton U dies. Milwaukee's 2678-20 is a 6-ton platform built around interchangeable jaws, while the 2778-20 is a 12-ton U-die crimper.

Those systems overlap in some die forms, but they are not interchangeable simply because all are hydraulic.

How to choose a hydraulic crimper without overbuying

Connector first

Start with the connector manufacturer's table

If your work is dominated by a known lug/splice family, let its published tooling and die index drive the tool decision.

Access

Head opening and rotation can be decisive

Large C-head openings and rotating heads help around installed conductors; remote heads can separate head weight from the pump.

Production

Battery tools trade setup for speed

Automatic retraction, pressure verification and crimp logging can matter on repetitive work, but they do not replace connection-system verification.

Compare current listings only after you know whether your work calls for a 6T jaw system, a 12T U-die C-head, a remote hydraulic head or a documented dieless system.

10,000 psi remote systems need exact head/pump matching

Burndy lists the Y750BHXT as a 12-ton remote C-head operating at 10,000 psi and using U dies. Greenlee lists RK12CX as a 10K-psi remote multi-purpose tool with adapters. Do not connect a head to an arbitrary pump based only on a pressure number; use the coupler, hose, pump and head combination specified by the manufacturer.

Dieless hydraulic crimping is its own path

Dieless 12-ton tools can remove the die-set inventory burden, but the tool still has a published connector/conductor range. Greenlee's EK12ID family, for example, is published for color-coded lugs and splices across specific copper/aluminum ranges. Treat that as a tool-specific system, not as permission to crimp every connector that physically fits the head.

Does 10,000 psi tell me the crimping tonnage?

No. System pressure and output force are related through the hydraulic design. Select the head/pump combination the manufacturer specifies rather than converting pressure into assumed tool capacity.

Can a battery crimper still be hydraulic?

Yes. Many professional cordless crimpers use an electric motor and battery to drive a hydraulic pump. Battery-powered and hydraulic are not opposites.

Should I buy a 6-ton or 12-ton hydraulic crimper?

Start with the connector and die/head system. A 6-ton W-die utility tool and a 12-ton U-die tool serve different approved connector ecosystems.
